Returning to this area for the third time to participate in the continuing relief and recovery efforts, the mission team from First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska has built a relationship with Bayou Blue, TRAC, and the community. In his Easter sermon, Pastor Dick challenges us to find Jesus in places where we don't expect by looking beyond where we think He is. As an unskilled laborer, I'm out of my comfort zone when it comes to home repair. As I reflect on Pastor Dick's message, I remember it's not so important what you do when serving but that you have the heart to serve. I see how each member of the mission team has an unique gift to complete the team. The Presbyterian Workcamp directors share with the mission team the importance of rebuilding lives that have been devastated by the hurricanes, relating to the homeowners, making the time to listen, and just showing that we care. So, I use my gift of time and a listening ear to really hear what Miss Tracey, Miss Nancy, and Mr. Nolan have to say...of their heartache and hope. Mr. Nolan hopes his house is complete enough by next year when we return that he can host us all to a BBQ; then he hugs each of us and says "you're all angels, you really are." We arrived Sunday evening in the Volunteer Village to mmet our hosts, Cassie and Jessie, two Young Adult Volunteers, who manage the village and organize the week's chores-cooking, cleaning, devotions, and working with TRAC, the organization that sets up and supplies the job sites. We selected our "pods", the two person coated cardboard structures that would be our homes for the coming week. Each was equipped with one light and a vent for heating, if absolutely necessary. Showers were in a nearby trailer and porta-johns were also available. Unlike many PDA villages, Houma actually has a permanent building on the premises where we cooked and ate our meals and gathered for group activities and devotions. Monday morning we set off to our job sites--two homes in Montegut, LA which were under construction while the owners lived in trailer. Our jobs included general clean-up, taping and mudding the drywall, sanding and painting the exterior. We had some instruction early on but our technique was less than perfect. Nevertheless, we perserved and left the buildings markedly improved and further along the path to completion. We had an opportunity to speak with the owners, their family members and neighbors. They shared their stories with us. At the end of the week, we presented them with some quilts that had been made by members of a church in Minnesota who have adopted that as a ministry to those in need in the gulf. Some of us also took a post-Katrina tour of New Orleans and experienced first-hand the devestation that is still shocking after all this time. The trip was not only a great opprotunity for service but also for fellowship. A special bond developed between us as we adjusted to our accomodations and our work on the sites. We also had an opportunity to sample the local cuisine (including fried alligator) and attempt the cajun two-step at a local dance hall. many thanks to Rob Stotz who was our leader--ever calm, patient and resourceful. This was an experience we felt God gave us so that we could come back to our church and report to them and get them all fired up. I know there are many people who would love to come down there and "work" and have the skills to continue with the process. The Blanchards were a wonderful family to work with. Although we had skilled people in our group it was great that Norris was able to tell us exactly what he wanted and that our group was able to do the work, hopefully, to his satisfaction. We believe we got him up and going and that he will be able to continue now. Most all the heavy work is finished and he will be able to do the rest. I even thought it would be a great experience for our church to come down for the house raising. I have no idea when that would be but to experience that and help with it would be awesome! Here we go again-decrepit housing and outhouses, but wait - a real shower trailer. Great! There was the camp host's smiling face and welcome. As usual, we hit the ground running, so many things to do and so little time. For the following days it was work, work, work. But not really work. More like getting together with new "old" friends and settling into a comfortable routine. I went thinking "I'll be able to help someone, only I realized that I was the one being helped. The generosity and friendliness of those we were there to help showed up as God's people are here to help one another. Our work in Houma, Louisiana changed us all in one way or another as we were shaped for serving God. As a result of being shaped it felt rewarding as we gave more than we received. We returned from Houma with a renewed sense of believing in the goodness and worth of humanity. the love and warmth and generosity of the familie were admirable. The families served us Cajun meals. They prepared meals weekly as an expression of thanks to the volunteer teams. We laughed and ate and learned the history of the area. Our hat goes off to them and their strong faith and ability to share their lives with others. They made us official "Back Door Cajuns." AY-eeeeeeeeeeeeee! It takes research to find a good fit for our group and its abilities, as that does change every year (as the kids move on). On the first morning we meet with TARC at the good Earth Volunteer Village who gave us a good project overview. Right away, Gordon (TRAC worksite supervisor) gave us a tour around the three homes that they wanted us to work on for that week. That was a very good start, as we were able to look at all the work and try to allocate our help and get as much of what was needed done as possible. At one house, a good deal of time was spent repairing poor work done by an earlier group (sheetrock, joint compound and plumbing rough outs). At the other site, the owner kept the work growing, so we did what we could (car port/shed removal, water heater cover replacement, general outside repairs and painting). One of the most valuable things we discovered is that given an air conditioned lunch place, much more work gets done in the afternoon. The Petit Calliou Fire Dept. treated us to an air conditioned lunch place everyday-a big plus. We are always disappointed that we can't do everything that we see needs doing, but we as a group felt that it was useful work for deserving people. In houma, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance works closely with T.R.A.C., the local coordinating organization. T.R.A.C.'s leaders quickly identified our skills and we were matched with two families whose houses received roofs, windows, doors, siding and paint by our hands. We, in turn, received heartfelt thanks, nice sun tans, firmer muscles, Louisiana t-shirts, a taste for Cajun food and new friends in Houma, LA. We also gained a great respect for T.R.A.C. and our Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program. Things that we have taken for granted like hot water, clean clothes, houses, air conditioning, and basic life choices have been rethought and priorities have changed. People like the families we worked with now are models of courage, tenacity, and determination. We, the volunteers, are the recipients of this experience, receiving from our new friends the gifts of honesty, unconditional love and thanks for our small contribution.
