Tornados are formed
when cool air overrides a layer of warm air, forcing the warm air
to rise rapidly producing a twisting,
funnel-shaped cloud
that extends to the ground with whirling winds that can reach 300
mph.
Experiment: Try this out!
For this experiment you will
need two 2 liter bottles. Put some water just under half of one
bottle. Place the empty
bottle on top of this one and use duct tape to seal the two together. (Optional
bottle connectors can also be purchased from your local education supply store)
Then turn the bottle upside down and shake it in a circular
motion to make a virtual tornado. For added fun add 2-4 drops of food coloring,
beads, glitter or small plastic animals to the water.
